Both in books and in art museums I noticed something in the ancient Indo/Asia/African art sections. They purposely leave out two of the most prevalent subjects; sex and violence.

There seems to be a misguided attempt by historians and curators to “civilize” these cultures. It’s OK for Western artists to depict graphic violence or eroticism but don’t’ show the same produced by non-European cultures, “they might see it as derogatory or racist.” It’s a shame because you aren’t getting an honest look at a culture or it’s art when it is censored by  “political correctness”

Artist-Thomas Eakins

Eakins  Another realist, one of the first great American artists and one of the first to use photographs as reference. If you read a biography of Thomas Eakins odds are that 80% of it will be about whether he was gay or not. Art historians seem to be over-concerned about homosexuality (same goes for biographies of Michelangelo,

 Caravaggio, etc.

. Does it matter? I’m straight but I’m tempted to create a series of works featuring nude males, set the art world into a frenzy regarding who I’m sleeping with. It seems like a sure path to free publicity

Starting a new painting, a landscape. I was considering doing something outrageous; sexist, racist, erotic, a painting of dead puppies anyting to try to goad someone into commenting, get a discussion started. But I’ll do a landscape.
